We've added a Progress Tracker

We've been getting some great feedback from our players.

One piece of feedback we got was from someone who has never played a piece of interactive fiction before. They said 'Maybe you could add a progress bar?'. To this player, the request was very simple; they see Halfling Dale as a book - isn't it obvious they should be able to do the equivalent of check the page numbers?

But to anyone who's played (or written) a bit of interactive fiction, the scope of the challenge of adding something like a progress bar should be immediately apparent. The story has multiple splits, and splits within those splits, all of different lengths, which will take the player on different winding journeys before they reach the end (of which there are more than one, so how do you account for that too?).

It's a heck of a question, and we puzzled over it for some time. In the end, we came to the compromise you can see in the screenshots. A list of major, universal milestones in the story, that will get crossed off as you pass them. Not a progress bar - but a progress tracker.

We're pretty pleased with how it's come out.

But what are your thoughts; how do we solve progress tracking in interactive fiction?
